Je suis en train de lire ce tome... La couverture est vachement cool !
À la hauteur du contenu ;)
(Argh comme on peut détester les Syndics encore plus que les Enigmas dans cette série... c'est dingue xD)

please don't get me wrong I love the pic and it is a thousand times better then the ones that where used for the US version I was just more asking what kinda info you where given when they gave you this project.
The books descriptions of the alliance and syndicate worlds ships are " Shark like" in visual nature including fin type structure, with few rounded edges because that would be to hard to engineer in the few months they are built and the life of the ship is only expected to be less than 3 years so why put that much effort into them.
This fact is made evident when the dauntless herself being only 3 years old starts to have systematic failures in important parts of the ship. parts of almost every book describe interior welds that are so half assed that they still have ungrinded slag on them.
While much of what you have said is true to the fact that there is no point in putting details into the art due to the fact that those details get lost on the actual cover, and I can see what you did with the fighters making them almost draw my eye to the fact that the ship itself is much larger. I am not at all dissing your art It is Awesome I could never do it, its still more of a question of what where you given as a template for the ships.

OK so my one question here that I have been wondering from the moment I came across your covers is are you just pulling these out of what you see them as or are you taking the descriptions from the author?
in the books they are described a thousand times as "Shark" like with exposed hard points, lots of antana sticking off of them to the fore very few rounded parts due to bad construction.  and the alliance does not use fighters because they are pointless. I love the your art its great just more of a question of how much direction you are given before you start to make the next cover.

hello
please provide me with the descriptions because I don't have them
(I didn't read all the series)

also I think in term of visual impact and composition (with a title and an image that speaks for itself)
so there are rules to follow, like the fighters for scale and depth, no antennas because not visible, so on...
other than that, I depict the ships as I want judging from what I read...no directions.

also the author likes my covers better than the US ones...;)

i've liked seing your covers, the covers of the editions i've read inexplicably depict Blackjack in powered armor, with squads of soldiers, as if he were personally leading them into battle, something a fleet commander would not do...

yes , the editors wants thoses covers even if that's nonsense...thing is the author himself finds it stupid but can't do anything about it...
thanks for liking mines!:)

Ouch... when your spaceship is hit by the giant laser beam of death, you know that the warranty has been voided. :D Nice book cover!!

Well, then... if the other guy's spaceship is hit by the giant laser beam of death mounted on your spaceship, not only will their warranty be voided, but the crews of all the spaceships in their fleet will void their bowels and flee in terror.  Those bloody exclusion clauses will do that to you. :D Yep.

Anyway, nice artwork!

Love the ship design and execution... Nice colour palette, with the drama coming from the angry red and white weapon blast.

Admit to being ambivalent about the blurred star field; it's almost as if you were trying to reproduce a still from a CGI-heaavy movie. Will be interesting to see how that works on the book cover - I'll have to look out for it in FNAC!

I am nit-picking - it's a great image as ever! :-)

Sorry - I wasn't clear - the motion blur.... You have slightly streaked the stars  to heighten the impression of movement. It seems a little superfluous given the amount of engine glow you have, that's all...

nope because the engines thrusters will be on the back of the book so it's not clear when you see it in the shelves because you'll see only the right part of the image (see the actual cover I've added in the description)
as I tried to say numerous times, a book cover has it's own rules to follow...

I don't think I have the background necessary to do a real critique.  But I can write some thoughtful things.  I first looked at this piece yesterday and thought about it, giving myself 24 hours to reflect on my first impressions. As others have noted you have done some really neat things to suggest the speed of the "Indomptable" and its two small escort ships.  I love that. Also, I find the presence of Earth well done at several levels.  One of them is the angle those ships have in relation to Earth.  It looks as if they are going to enter into parking orbit or they are going only to graze the atmosphere without going into orbit, or maybe go directly to the surface.  It's a slightly unusual angle and I love that.

The only part where I am bemused and don't really know what ti think (or what I am meant to think?) has to do with the big, intense ray of yellowish white light (with red edges) up at the top right.  My mind can't seem to decide if that ray of light is an attack on the "Indomptable" from a ship higher up or the opposite, an attack by the "Indomptable", firing its biggest guns at a ship higher up.

The name of the book is "guardian" so it makes sense with the title on it... As it protects earth.

Also I think that you can see a radius around the source of the huge laser that gives a hint for the direction...the dreadnought is firing to an enemy...

The art director wanted a huge firing... And it's a book cover, not a "real illustration" so it sometimes feels a bit weird to got it right
