At the mountains of madness 2 by moonxels At the mountains of madness 2 by moonxels
So I'm painting for 3 years now and my "real" first illustration ever (the one that started it all for me) was "at the mountain of madness" inspired image from the Lovecraft universe...

but time has passed and I felt I had to fix it in numerous ways as it was full of errors mainly in composition and painting technique...
thing is that it's still powerfull in it's mood so it deserved a full rework, I think I got it way better this time while keeping the strong feeling it has...you tell me.

Now this is more like it!
I absolutely love the pyramid theme. It reminds me of the temple like structure from Aliens vs Predator. The explorers fit in well too. The viewer wonders what lies behind the doors of the otherworldly pyramids, are they inhabited,
If yes , what are the creature like? Are they dangerous?Do they have advanced technology?
If no, what caused their death? Do we have something that we do not know about to fear?
The fact that it seems to be in a frozen , uninhabited iceland just completes the pic...
Definitely one of my favourites..
Great job Moonchild...

vraiment magnifique ("les montagnes hallucinées" mon oeuvre préférée de HPL) on sent bien le caractère "cyclopéen" des constructions encore bravo

"I could not help feeling that they were evil things -- mountains of madness whose farther slopes looked out over some accursed ultimate abyss."

Beautiful and Eerie. The angle is perfect, how you're just behind the men and you can see the buildings resemble the mountains behind them. The colors are lovely, I really like the fog that lies around the buildings, and subtle. Whats stunning is how at first this piece looks so gorgeous, and it's only after you start looking and seeing the details, the fog around the buildings and the ancient designs, that it starts to look creepy and wrong.

This is very much how I've always pictured the Mountains in the story. Something so different that it sneaks into your mind driving you to brinks of insanity before you even realize there's something wrong.

So cool, yet it seems more structured than than how it's described in the book. But I guess it's impossible to draw geometric shapes from another universe, since we can't go there! Instant fav :D

you should know that it's more "inspired by" than a true to the story illustration...all I was aiming for was the right mood.

The first version was good, but the rework is much better. It made me want to grab my copy of the story. I usually go on a Lovecraft bing of re-reading around Halloween, but Christmas works too :)

So I tried writing a critique because I really like the picture, but I haven't the skills to be credible.
While I like both versions of it, you have definitely found a more dramatic perspective in the newer illustration. Having the eye drawn from the small people to the nearest building, and on to the farther ones is a much more interesting way to experience the picture.
On the other hand, if this were a storyboard, I think the earlier picture would go well just before the latest one.
Great Work! My husband has read a lot of H. P. Lovecraft, and it may be time for me to read some now

So, first of all : superb image for a great story - the only Lovecraft story I can read all the way through... I'm afraid I find him a tedious and repetitive writer! (...and believe me I have tried - Amazon does a roaring trade from me!)

Your images: the colour palette for both seems identical and well suited for the subject, emphasising the cold Antarctic conditions. The perspective on your updated version is far superior. I agree with reflectionsinwater, and find the positioning of the explorers far better - they are made more insignificant by their proximity to the Elder Things city buildings. That increased sense of scale also heightens the tension of the partly obscured doorways.

The major change, which I find the most effective, is allowing the buildings to rise above the mountains - to become mountains themselves, in fact... The lower perspective is very effective.

When you stated that this was a very personal interpretation I was intrigued, because as soon as I saw the image I thought "Lovecraft!" So I had a quick look - and he describes cubes and cones... memory!

Anyway: excellent interpretation and your updated version shows very real progress - well done! :-)

thanks a lot, that's the sort of comments I like, good analysis and great crit!

I didn't wanted to paint it exactly like in the book but more from memory with my own elements in there.

"I didn't wanted to paint it exactly like in the book but more from memory with my own elements in there..." And that's the way it should be! ;-)

For me, you captured the essence so well, your image was the way I remembered Lovecraft's description :-) That's why I had to go and (re)check!!

Very nice recomposition illustrating, in my opinion, one of best, if not the best, novels of HPL.
However, aren't the mountains in the background still too natural ?
Nevertheless, I LOVE this art

It is indeed better. The people are brought into a much larger focus, and while the textures are a bit less, they are much more clearer and every part isn't superfluous. :) Lovely job.
